A project under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy (SFCS) that provides information and advice to policy makers, researchers and practitioners in the fields of early intervention and childhood development. Early Childhood Initiatives
The National Agenda for Early Childhood was endorsed by the Australian Government in December 2005 to achieve more efficient and effective outcomes in early childhood. The Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs has been progressing the commitment to the National Agenda in a number of ways. This includes Early Childhood Initiatives such as the Parenting Information Project and the Child Care Links projects, as well as through the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy and support of child care services.

Under the Program there are approximately 90 Commonwealth Carer Respite Centres and outlets established across Australia and a Commonwealth Carer Resource Centre has been established in each state and territory capital city, with one national Commonwealth Carer Resource Centre.

Families with a son or daughter with severe disability are now able to financially prepare for providing current and future care through the Special Disability Trust created by the Commonwealth Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. Families can place up to $500,000 in a Special Disability Trust and this will not impact on the beneficiary's income support or the gifter's pension.
